Trout Fishing in Scotland

Trout fishing is widely available in Scotland. Many rivers are covered by a Protection Order. This means that you must have a permit to fish, but ensures that brown trout fishing is widely accessible.

The Brown Trout Salmo trutta is one of the few native fish species found in Scotland. Many of the world's rivers and lochs were stocked with brown trout from Loch Leven (Perthshire). Fishing for brownies has long been regarded as the popular sport. Fly-fishing is by far the most common method, but you will also find beats which allow bait and spinning. Today a permit rarely costs more than a fiver and what an angling experience you get in return.

The Sea Trout is simply the migratory form of the species (anadromous). As a migratory fish the sea trout is not covered by the standard trout permit. To fish for them you will need to get a migratory fish permit. This usually means a "salmon" permit.

Goldenloch

Glensherup
Glensherup is a 29 acre loch set in spectacular scenery in the Perthshire hills. Brown and Rainbow Trout fly fishing from the bank or boat. Corporate & Clubs are welcome. Stocked on a weekly basis with quality fish from 1.5lbs upwards. Catch and release is permitted once limit is reached.

St Mary's Loch
Offers bank fishing and loch style drifting for wild brown trout against the back drop of the beautiful scenery and the heather covered hills.

St John's Loch
The sporting quality of the trout just has to be experienced first hand. The loch also has the distinction of supporting the most northerly hatch of Mayfly in the British Isles. Managed by the St John's Loch Improvement Association, a non-profit organisation.

Macbiehill Estate Trout Fishery

Broom Fisheries
Five fly only lochs, well stocked with rainbow, brown and golden trout ranging from 2lbs to in excess of 20lbs. Set in beautiful naturalised surroundings, with prolific natural aquatic life forms, these waters are ideal for nymph and dry fly fishing.

Loch Ettrick and Loch Fern
Fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout fishing on 2 lochs. Loch Ettrick is 20 acre loch stocked with rainbow trout from 13 inches.

Ardgowan Trout Fishery
A 37 acre loch stocked predominantly with rainbow trout from 1.5Ibs with some specimens now reaching 20Ibs. The loch also contains wild brown trout and brook trout.

Portmore Game Fisheries
Portmore Loch lies to the South of Edinburgh and is one of the most scenic fishing locations in the area. The loch is well known for it's natural brown trout which nowadays we prefer anglers to return and also for the quality of its rainbow trout which are transported from Devon.

Wellsfield Trout Fishery

Airdrie & District Angling Club
Airdrie & District Angling Club have managed Hillend Loch since 1949 although we have records of our club under the name of Airdrie Angling Club, fishing the loch as far back as 1859. Airdrie & District Angling Club is now a registered Community Amateur Sports Club, and regulated under CASC rules. Full membership is open to anglers who have been associate members for 2 consecutive years. The club has 700 members making it the largest independent angling club in the UK. There is an area of the lochside to the North-East which is exclusively reserved for full members. Day membership is available from the lodge and associate memberships are available by appointment.

The Beauly Angling Club
The Club was founded around 1940 by the late Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, a most distinguished commando war-time hero who was also a member of the Lovat Scouts. The Club was then called the Kilmorack Ex-Servicemen's Angling Association Committee. The fly only water now runs all the way down the river from Lovat Bridge to Wester Lovat.

Blairgowrie, Rattray and District Angling Association
Controls part of the fishing on the River Ericht covering some 6 miles of the river, mainly on both the Blairgowrie and Rattray banks. Club Membership is available to local residents only. Permits for non-members and visitors can be purchased at the two Blairgowrie tackle outlets for Salmon, Sea Trout or Brown Trout and Grayling fishing. These permits allow visitors to fish the BRDAA areas of the River Ericht and are available by Day, Week, or Season.

Busby (White Cart Improvement) Angling Association
Seven miles (middle stretch) of the White Cart Water; from waterfoot downstream to Crookstone. Four miles (lower stretch) of the Leven Water from Gateside/Barrhead to Crookston (all tributaries) for salmon, brown trout and sea trout.

Brechin Angling Club
8 miles of fishing for brown trout seatrout and salmon on the West Water as well as brown trout fishing on the 18 acre Loch Saugh

Carrick Angling Club
A salmon and trout fishing club in Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland. The club offers river and still water fishing to everyone, irrespective of age and ability. For a very reasonable charge, a good part of the river Girvan is available to fish from the estuary to three miles inland. Our reservoir is still open for fishing and will be re-stocked throughout the year. Disabled access fishing platform.

Caurnie Angling Club
The loch is stocked on a regular basis mainly with brown trout and a few hundred rainbows in the high summer . The limit per calendar day is 4 fish. Visitor bank-tickets are available throughout the season and can be purchased from “JB Angling” in Kirkintilloch and “Janice”, the hairdressers in Milton of Campsie. Priced at £15. These must be purchased prior to fishing.

Crieff Angling Club
Controls three beats on the River Earn: Upper Strowan, Braidhaugh, and Drummond Castle which together cover some 5 miles of the river, mostly both banks. Permit is by Day Ticket or Club Membership. Day Tickets for non-members, can be purchased to fish for Salmon & Sea Trout, Brown Trout and Grayling on separate Permits. Members, local or country, may for any species. The Club also controls Drummond Loch.

Dee Salmon Fishing Improvement Association
Home to Scotland's greatest spring run of Atlantic salmon. For over a century anglers have come from all over the world to pit their skills against this most prized quarry. The majestic Royal Dee flows from the heart of the Cairngorm Mountains for over 80 miles to the North Sea at Aberdeen. The Dee is a clear, fast flowing river which flows through the magnificent scenery of Royal Deeside. In addition to the spring salmon run the river also provides excellent summer fishing for salmon, grilse and sea-trout.

Dreghorn Angling Club
D.A.C. was established in 1925 and has since held fishings on the River Irvine and Annick water. The Club waters are stocked annually with brown trout ranging from 10" to 13" and enjoys a run of grilse, salmon and sea trout every year.

Dunoon & District Angling Club
Fishing on Lochs Tarsan and Loskin and Dunoon Reservior as well as salmon and trout fishing on the Rivers Massan, Cur, Finnart and Ruel.

Highland Sea Angling Club
Whether you prefer Skate off the Summer Isles, Shark or Halibut off Scrabster and Orkney, Haddock from the waters off Lochinver, Or Cod and Ling courtesy of Kinlochbervie, The Highland Sea Angling Club runs regular trips, Around the coast - Around the Year Trips cost as little as £30 and are open to non-members. Tackle is usually available if required.

Inverness Angling Club
Inverness Angling Club (IAC) was formed in 1917 and successfully supports and promotes angling in Inverness and the surrounding areas. Its objectives are to encourage angling; to acquire by lease or otherwise the right of fishing for salmon, sea trout, brown trout or other fish in any of the rivers or lochs in the district; and to improve these fishings. Membership is open to anglers resident in the City of Inverness, Smithton, Culloden and Balloch. Daily and weekly visitor tickets for IAC’s water are available from Graham’s Tackle Shop in Castle Street, Inverness.

Isle of Bute Angling Association
The Association has the fishing rights to Loch Ascog, the 2 Dhu Lochs and the Greenan Loch. Loch Ascog and the Dhu Lochs have good quality pike, perch and roach fishing available. The Greenan Loch has common carp, mirror carp, crucian carp, bream, tench and roach available to the angler who relishes a challenge. There is also some fantastic fishing around the coast of Bute.

Jedforest Angling Association
Around 5 Miles of the River Teviot, one of the major tributaries of the famous River Tweed, is available for salmon, sea-trout, brown trout and grayling angling.

Laurencekirk & District AA
Luther Water - brown trout plus salmon & sea trout. River Bervie - brown trout plus salmon & sea trout. Loch Odly - brown trout & rainbows.

Linlithgow Coarse Angling Club
The clubs main focus is to provide a meeting place and information source for coarse anglers in and around the West Lothian region.

Newton Stewart Angling Association
The River Cree enters Wigtown Bay on the Solway Firth and has an excellent run of spring salmon and fabulous sea trout fishing. The club also has some superb loch fishing for rainbow and wild brown trout.

North Uist Angling Club
The Club was formed back in 1952 by a group of like-minded friends who enjoyed good company, fishing and a dram in more or less equal measures.Today membership has grown to over 100 and includes adults and juniors resident on the Uists and other members from out with the Islands. From the beginning the club has endeavoured to develop and grow for the benefit of NUAC members and also to accommodate visiting anglers who appreciate fishing as it used to be. Each year with the generous help of North Uist Estate we are able to offer members a varied outings list and we are continuing to upgrade our fleet of boats for members and visitors use.

The Oban and Lorn Angling Club
The Club was founded in the 1940's but fell away in the fifties. In 1972 the club was reformed by a group of keen anglers to promote fly-fishing links in the Lorn of Argyll with the leases of seven lochs.Today the club has leases to twenty-four lochs and nine boats on seven lochs with a further access to one side of the River Awe below the weir on the Taynuilt side.

Pitlochry Angling Club
Salmon, trout and grayling fishing on rivers and lochs around Pitlochry, Perthshire in the Highlands of Scotland, including the River Tummel and River Garry, and Loch Bhac and Loch Kinardochy. Pitlochry Angling Club’s policy is to provide good river and loch fishing at reasonable cost.

Shetland Anglers Association
For the adventurous trout fisherman, Shetland is a dream come true. With more than three hundred lochs, and a supply of hard fighting, wild brown trout that rival any in Britain, it is a paradise for anglers of all ages.

St Winnoch AC
Since 1927 the St.Winnoch Angling Club has provided members and visitors access to several waters within the local area at a very reasonable price .Castle Semple Loch and Barr Loch offer excellent coarse fishing with pike to 20lb+, roach, perch and eel. Salmon and sea-trout are also present in the loch. The River Calder has 5 miles fishing for wild brown trout and salmon. Queenside Loch is situated within the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park and offers excellent brown trout fishing .

Silver Lure Sea Angling Club
Founded as long ago as 1974, and is now one of the longest running Sea Angling Clubs in Scotland. The Club has an active membership which includes guys (and girls) of all levels of experience. Holds monthly boat and shore outings across Scotland, travelling to areas such as the Mull of Galloway, the East Coast area between Arbroath and Montrose, and also the West Coast sea lochs. Car-sharing allows members without transport to get to the trips, and save money on fuel costs.

Stornoway Sea Angling Club
The club has played a large part in the community of Stornoway for close to 50 years now. Since it's establishment in 1963, not only has the club since then successfully being promoting sea angling as a sport in the Western Isles of Scotland and giving many people access to the fine boat fishing that can be had in the waters around the Isle of Lewis, but also providing a superb social scene, with a clubhouse with many facilities at hand for members and guests a like to enjoy.The club runs numerous fishing competitions and trips through out the year for people of all ages, and is always keen for newcomers to take up sea angling either as a sport or as a passtime.

Only 20 miles north of Carlisle - UAAA has fishing for Salmon, sea trout and big wild brown troutThe Association has 8 miles of this 35 mile river.There is plenty of fishing available. We have one 4 mile beat north of Lockerbie (Applegarth Beat) and another 4 mile beat south of Moffat (Upper Beat), mostly both banks.

Upper Avon Angling Association
The club has the brown trout fishings on the River Avon (Lanarkshire) from 400 meters down stream of Browns Bridge upstream to Drumclog where indicated by sign posts and on Glengavel Reservoir. The club has its own hatchey and is active in conservation. Season and day tickets are available at very reasonable cost.
